Informacje dodatkowe:

Tell Atrib, starożytne Athribis, leżące w Delcie Nilu, na przedmieściach miasta Benha, 50 km na północ od Kairu, było pierwszym terenem badań prof. Kazimierza Michałowskiego w Egipcie po II wojnie światowej. Początkowo były to wykopaliska Muzeum Narodowego w Warszawie, od trzeciego sezonu Stacji Archeologii Śródziemnomorskiej UW w Kairze.

Opis stanowiska i badań:

Profesor Kazimierz Michałowski rozpoczął badania tzw. Komu A, znajdującego się teraz w środku dzielnicy zwanej Nową Benha. Odkrył tam fundamenty świątyń z czasów Taharki i Amazisa, z depozytami fundacyjnymi obu faraonów. Natrafił też na wielki zespół łaziebny z czasów rzymskich.

Pod koniec lat 60-tych kierownictwo misji przejęła dr Barbara Ruszczyc, rozpoczynając wykopaliska na Komie Sidi Youssuf. Nazwa ta została przyjęta od grobowca Sidi Youssufa, położonego na szczycie tego wzniesienia. Na prośbę Komitetu Koptyjskiego wykopaliska koncentrowały się na odnalezieniu śladów najstarszej bazyliki chrześcijańskiej z IV wieku n.e., która wg źródeł arabskich miała posiadać złocone kolumny. Badania potwierdziły istnienie bazyliki na tym terenie.

W 1985 roku kierownictwo przejął prof. Karol Myśliwiec, kontynuując wykopaliska po południowej stronie komu w głębszych warstwach: rzymskich i ptolemejskich. Badania w Tell Atrib zakończyła prof. Hanna Szymańska.

Odkryto rozległą dzielnicę mieszkalną z cegły mułowej. W części miasta z okresu rzymskiego na szczególną uwagę zasługuje willa rzymska z reprezentacyjnym pomieszczeniem z triclinium i basenikiem z wbudowanymi amforami, jak również ciekawy system kanałów kanalizacyjnych. W okresie ptolemejskim miasto posiadało sporą dzielnicę warsztatową działającą w III i II wieku p.n.e., produkującą m. in. naczynia i figurki z gliny. Na szczególną uwagę zasługuje piec do wypalania ceramiki oraz zespół naczyń niewypalonych. Dzielnica mieszkalna wyposażona była w łaźnie. Jeden zespół łazienek pochodzi z III wieku p.n.e., inny
z II wieku p.n.e.

Osadnictwo wokół Komu Sidi Youssuf zostało zaświadczone w kilku, stratygraficznie oddzielonych i bardzo dobrze datowanych warstwach obejmujących kilka okresów: wczesno-ptolemejski (koniec IV–III wieku n.e.), średnio-ptolemejski – obejmujący rządy Ptolemeuszy V i VI (205–145 r.), okres późno-ptolemejski przechodzący we wczesnorzymski (I wiek p.n.e.–I wiek n.e.), okres rzymski (I–III wiek) oraz okres późnorzymski i bizantyński (IV–VII wiek).
